Edward A. Whaley, 92, Cynthiana, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at Cedar Ridge Health Campus. He was born February 22, 1914 in Shelbyville, Indiana to the late Martha Bassett and Galvy Whaley. After receiving his BS Degree at Indiana University in 1937, where he pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon, he extended his education by also graduating from the Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1939 thus beginning his 67 years of service to Harrison County. After serving as its Coroner for 25 years and co-owning Whaley-McCarty Funeral home, he continued his life’s work in 2001 as a Funeral Director with Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, where he was employed until his death. He proudly served the country he loved as a First Lt. and Fighter Pilot Trainer in the United States Air Force during WWII, receiving the Bronze Star.

Throughout his life, he continued his charitable spirit by offering his services as an American Red Cross First Aid Instructor for 15 years, a Scout Master and possessed nerves of steel by teaching countless individuals how to drive. Ed was an active Elder at the Cynthiana Christian Church as well as continuing his active participation with the Cynthiana Lion’s Club for 60 years. He was a current member of The Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Margaret Waits Whaley and his first wife, Virginia Hill Whaley Clark. Survivors include two daughters, Marthanna Whaley (Jerry) Kallop of Winchester, KY and Las Vegas, NV and Mary Drane Whaley (Larry) Owens of Lexington and two beloved grandchildren, Miller “Whaley” Owens and Margaret Vimont “Maggie” Owens.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Cynthiana Christian Church by Dr. Larry W. Bishop. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery.

To honor Ed’s wishes, Mary Drane and Marthanna kindly ask that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Cynthiana Christian Church Scholarship Fund, 202 N. Main Street, Cynthiana, KY 41031.
